VSU Offers a Fresh Start for Quitters

VALDOSTA -- VSU Campus Wellness will offer a series of free smoking cessation classes to members of the Valdosta State and local communities from noon - 1 p.m. on January 22, 29 and February 12, 19 in the University Center Classroom 4123.

The American Cancer Society Freshstart program provides participants with the latest coping skills and group support during four, one-hour sessions that infuse information with self-exploration to determine personal triggers and possible motivations to quit.

Tim Yorkey, VSU training specialist, said the program guides participants as they develop personalized quit plans based on a combination of proven techniques and cessation treatments. Many people wanting to end their addiction to nicotine find value and comfort in a group approach.

“We are here to help people who are taking a vested interest in their health, and Freshstart is a proven resource to help people quit,” said Yorkey, a Freshstart program facilitator. “We encourage participants to attend all four sessions to ensure they get the support they need over an extremely difficult time; but even if people can only come to one or two sessions, they are welcome.”

Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch to the casual meetings. The session topics are:

Session 1: Understanding why I smoke and how my smoking affects those around me.

Session 2: Mastering the first few days off cigarettes.

Session 3: Overcoming obstacles to stay off cigarettes.

Session 4: Learn how to remain smoke-free.

To register, send an e-mail to Yorkey at teyorkey@valdosta.edu or call him at 229-219-1276. If you cannot attend on of the above sessions, call Yorkey to set up an alternative meeting time or to learn the dates/times of future smoking cessation sessions.
