Campus Group Hosts Auction for Big Brothers Big Sisters

VALDOSTA -- The Deep Release Poetry Society will host a silent auction from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at City Market, 101 N. Patterson Street. Proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lowndes County (BBBS).

The auction, which will take place during December's First Friday event, will feature artwork by members of the poetry society as well as Valdosta State University's Art Honor Society. BBBS will also be accepting donations and registering volunteers at the auction, which is the first community event ever hosted by the poetry society.

Event coordinator Alexis Hughes said she is graduating and stepping down from leadership soon and wanted to set a positive example for the society's future leaders by reaching outside campus to impact the community. The group shared her enthusiasm and chose Big Brothers Big Sisters because Hughes already had a connection with the organization.

"Deep Release always tries to 'reach out' to other departments to create a deep community feel at Valdosta State," said Hughes, who serves as a "big" volunteer with the local branch. Big Brothers/Big Sisters can always use more volunteers or funding and we believe very important to us to make sure that community programs flourish and succeed, especially when they are devoted to children."

E-mail Hughes at athughes@valdosta.edu for more information about the event. Call BBBS Enrollment Manager Melinee Calhoun at (866) 614-4215 for more information about volunteering.
