VSU Hosts 13th Annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day

VALDOSTA - The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Valdosta State University will host the 13th Annual Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day from 8:20 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Powell Hall Auditorium.

Approximately 50 high school students and 12 teachers from the local area will learn from workshops and presentations, and participate in a contest as well as door prize and group photo opportunities. Participating schools include Clinch County High School, Colquitt County High School, Early County High School, Georgia Christian School, Lowndes High School, Southland Christian School, Thomas County Central High School, Valdosta High School and Valwood School.

The annual project seeks to encourage female high school students to pursue the study of mathematics during their post-secondary studies and prepare for possible careers in mathematics-related fields. Offering a day of fun and learning, it is named for the late Sonia Kovalevsky (1850-1891), a Russian mathematician who was the first woman to earn a doctorate in Mathematics.

Sponsors include the Association for Women in Mathematics, Elizabeth City State University, the National Security Agency, the VSU Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the VSU Bookstore, Texas Instruments, Wild Adventures, The Learning Tree, Addison Wesley, McGraw Hill and Thomson Learning.
