Valdosta mayor honored with public service award

The Loyce W. Turner Outstanding Public Official Award for 2002 was presented to Valdosta Mayor James H. Rainwater, on April 11, at a luncheon held at Valdosta State University.

Rainwater, the fourth recipient of the award, was chosen for his leadership as the mayor of Valdosta for the past 14 years. He was recognized for his work in improving the quality of housing in Valdosta and the city's recognition as a City of Excellence in 2002 and receiving the Magnolia Award for Excellence in Housing.

VSU's Master of Public Administration Advisory Committee presents the award annually. The award, named after Loyce W. Turner, former Georgia state senator, is given to individuals who serve as role models for those just beginning or contemplating careers in public service.
