Helpers Webquest
Now that the students have been introduced to each of the community
helpers it's time to get them thinking about what they want to be when
they grow up. After the web quest students will understand
the many things that people do while at work. Have students draw
a picture of what they want to be when they grow up using paper,
crayons, markers and any other classroom materials. Have students
write the name of the profession at the top. So, if they
drew a doctor the students would be expected to write DOCTOR at the
top. Each students must draw items that go along with the
profession. Again, if they drew a doctor they could draw:
needle, hospital, ambulance. In addition, they must arrange a
time to share the picture with the teacher and orally say why they
chose that profession.

You are new in your neighborhood and you want to meet all of your new neighbors. You have decided to plan a cookout at your house to meet them. Once they arrive you realize that they are all community helpers. You meet them all and eat lunch with them. While eating you ask them some question about what is special about their job. You ask the fireman how many fires he has put out and you ask the doctor how many people he sees daily. After all the people leave you decide to write a letter and draw a picture to your friends where you use to live so they can see your new neighbors too. The TopicQuest Page has some links you might want to stop at before you write your letter so you can tell your friends more. The new Neighbor website tells about community helpers and what they do for a living. Have
a GREAT cookout!

Introduction:
D o you know how a police officer can help
you? Do you know what a librarian does? Many people see community
helpers only as those people who have jobs that we see and hear
about on television. There are many community helpers but
do children know enough about what they actually do? This WebQuest will
inform the first grade class about community helpers. The
students will be introduced to different community helpers with in the
community: librarian, firefighter, doctor, and police officer.
This WebQuest will guide each student through a variety of
different community helpers to find out what they actually do.
Students will be working with fifth grade students on this
project. The students will then take notes in their community helper
books they have made and at the end of the search they will decide; If
I could choose a community helper which one would I be?
Task:
By
the end of this task, students will have an understanding of what each
community helpers job is. By searching through each WebQuest,
students will developed several characteristics about each
community helper. Students will then decide, if they
could pick a community helper which one would they be. Student will
then get into small groups and role play which community helper
they chose while other students guess. Students will then share
with a friend, teacher or their fifth grade helper why they chose that
community helper.
Process:
There will be one fifth grade student to a pair of first grade
students. Students will visit each web site and learn about community
helpers: fighter fighter, police officer, doctor and librarian.
Students will have already created a community helpers book to record
their information in.
1. Where they work?
2. What does the job entail( what they do
everyday)?
3. What are they responsible for?
4. Facts one finds interesting
about this job.
Students will write down in their community helpers book, information they found in each of these questions.
After the students have finished the WebQuest students will:
decide
what community helper they would like to be
in small groups each students will role play
their community helper while
other guess
Students will share with a friend, teacher or
their fifth grade partner
why they picked the community
helper they did.

1. Curious George Takes a Job by

learn about working in a community because George "the curious monkey"
ventures out into the city and takes on many jobs.
2. I Can Be Anything by Ena Keo-This book is an excellent way to
introduce occupations to kindergarten students. This book is written
from a child's perspective on what he/she could do when he/she grows
up. Children of all ages have ideas about what type of job they want to
have when they are older. After reading this book, the teacher can
begin a discussion on occupations and list job choices on the board.
3. All About Things People Do by Melanie
and Chris Rice- See the attached
lesson to use with this great book!
Describes what people do in different
jobs, such as pilots, athletes, and hairdressers; what different places
