Step One: Introduction
I will ask
the
class, “Did you know that at one time there
were not 50 states?” During the colonial period the states were called
colonies
and there were only 13 at the time.
Today, we are
going to discuss the settlement of the first
colony location of Jamestown Virginia.
We will also talk about some of the problems Jamestown
faced and how they were resolved. The first activity you will complete
is
locating Jamestown on a
map and
drawing the route from England
to America.
Next you will predict some of the problems Jamestown
might be faced with. Then you will
research to see if your predictions were correct. After
you list the problems you will list the
resolution for each problem.

Step Two: Teaching the

1. Develop
content
relevant to the outcome.
(1) To begin
the
lesson I will by explain to the class the Jamestown
was the first American colony to settle in the New World. I will show where Jamestown
is located on the map and discuss how the colonists arrived at America. I will show the route that was used to reach America
from England. I will also explain that Jamestown
later became part of the Middle Atlantic region.
(2) Now we
are
going to talk about the problems that Jamestown
was faced with when settling into the New World. The teacher will information to the students
about the hardships of Jamestown.

teacher
will review the location of Jamestown
and the route from England
to America.

will review the problems Jamestown

pencils to illustrate where Jamestown

work independently and read about Jamestown. The students will complete a Making
Predictions handout after reading.

Assessing the Primary Learning Outcomes
- Students will
locate Jamestown
and illustrate the route from England
to America. The teacher will observe students locating Jamestown
on a map and will check the illustrations of the route from England
to America. The assessment will occur during Step 2 (1)
and (3).
- Students will
list problems that
occurred when settling the colony and make predictions of how the
problem may have been solved. The teacher will observe students as make
their list. The assessment will occur during Step 2 (1) and
(3).
